The K-index is a
reading of activity in the Earth's magnetic field taken from various
locations on the planet. This index is measured in the range 0 to 9. The K index is the average of of these readings. For the K-Index, LOW is GOOD! K = 0 Inactive K = 1 Very quiet K = 2 Quiet K = 3 Unsettled K = 4 Active K = 5 Minor storm K = 6 Major storm K = 7 Severe storm K = 8 Very severe storm K = 9 Extremely severe storm The A-index relates to geomagnetic stability and is calculated from K indices for the previous day and is measured on a scale from 0 to 400. For the A-Index, LOW is GOOD! A = 0 - 7 Quiet A = 8 - 15 Unsettled A = 16 - 29 Active A = 30 - 49 Minor storm A = 50 - 99 Major storm A = 100 - 400 Severe storm The SFI (Solar Flare Index) is measured in solar flux units (SFUs) and is a measurement of solar flare activity striking the earth's ionosphere from solar eruptions on the surface of the sun. It is the amount of radio "noise" or flux emitted at a frequency of 2800 MHz. By combining the SFI and the A-index and K-index, fairly accurate predictions of amateur radio propogation conditions can be made. For the SFI Index, HIGH is GOOD! 70 or less = Not good 80 = Good 90 = Better 100+ = Best |

This is many ham's favorite band because it is always open somewhere. During the summer daytime distances of 300-400 miles and night time distances of 1000 miles are very common. Winter days with 500 miles or more are usual and night time conditions bring intercontinental communications. The forty meter band is not as affected by the sunspot cycle as the twenty and ten meter bands are. Many nets frequent 40 meters both day and night. |
