Newport NC gmrs network

The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is a land-mobile FM UHF radio service designed for short-range two-way voice communication and is authorized under part 95 of the FCC regulations.  GMRS requires a license from the FCC in the United States.  Currently there is no test required to obtain a GMRS license; the license process is simply paying a $35 fee to the FCC to receive a call sign.  The advantage in GMRS versus ham radio is that all members of the family can "share" one license while in amateur radio, each member would have to have an amateur radio license.  GMRS handheld radios are available from several online retailes in the $100 range.

There is currently one GMRS repeater in Newport, with an approximate 35 mile range, and the weekly Newport GMRS net is each Monday at 7:00 pm.
